If there’s one winery that tops nearly every Napa Valley visitor’s must-see list, it’s Castello di Amorosa — often called the Castle Winery. And while some might be quick to dismiss it as a “tourist trap,” we’re here to tell you: that would be a BIG mistake — and their loss!
Napa’s famed Castle winery is not only a working winery producing acclaimed Italian-style wines, but also an incredible architectural feat that took 15 years to complete. Owner Dario Sattui went to painstaking lengths (seriously — it’s all documented here) to construct the Castle using authentic 14th-century Tuscan design principles. Every stone, beam, and iron fixture was hand-crafted using old-world techniques.
What started as a modest 8,500-square-foot vision grew into a 121,000-square-foot medieval masterpiece. The Castle includes five towers, courtyards, defensive ramparts, a chapel, stables, a moat, drawbridge — and yes, even a torture chamber.
Perched on a knoll just south of Calistoga, Castello di Amorosa offers breathtaking views of the surrounding vineyards — and best of all? It’s now accessible by bike, thanks to the newest segment of Napa Valley Vine Trail a paved, car-free bike path, connecting St. Helena to Calistoga.
Biking to the Castle Winery
If you’re looking for a fun and scenic way to visit the Castle, Napa Valley Bike Tours’ location in St. Helena at Charles Krug is a perfect launching point to rent bikes and ride to the Castle. Located just 5 miles south of Castello di Amorosa, our St. Helena outpost offers direct access to the the Vine Trail.
The route along the Vine Trail is mostly flat and ideal for recreational riders — but fair warning: the driveway leading up to the Castle is fairly steep. Most casual bikers on regular cruiser bikes will likely find themselves walking the final stretch. Pedal-assist electric bikes are highly recommended and will have you saying, “What hill?” as you cruise up to the Castle without breaking a sweat.
Note: The Vine Trail is on the east side of Hwy. 29 and Castello di Amorosa is on the west side of the highway. You will have to cross the roadway to get to the Castle, and again to get resume your ride on the Vine Trail. Be patient and cautious to cross safely.
Plan Your Timing
Good to know: Visits to Castello di Amorosa are by appointment only — and they really mean it. You’ll need to show your reservation QR code at the gate, or you’ll be turned away. Since the Castle itself isn’t visible from the road, many first-time visitors mistakenly assume they can just ride up and check it out. Don’t make that mistake — Book ahead!
To time your bike ride, we recommend this simple formula:
- Arrive at Napa Valley Bike Tours (at Charles Krug) 1 hour before your appointment at Castello di Amorosa
- Allow 20–30 minutes for check-in and bike fitting
- Estimate 30 minutes for the 5-mile ride along the Vine Trail and up the Castle driveway
This timing allows for a relaxed pace and a few scenic photo ops en route — Don’t miss stopping at the iconic Welcome to Napa Valley Sign!
Keep the Adventure Going
Castello di Amorosa might be the headliner, but there’s plenty more to explore and extend your day. A few ideas:
- Sterling Vineyards – About 2 miles from the Castle, Sterling is known for its aerial gondola ride up to the hilltop tasting room.
- Bothe Park – Take a break in the shade of California’s farthest inland coastal redwoods.
- Calistoga – Ride all the way into this charming town to discover local shops, sidewalk cafés, spas, and restaurants. It’s a great place to cool down and refuel before heading back to St. Helena.
So, can you bike to Napa’s famous Castle winery?
The answer is YES — and we might be biased, but we think it’s the most fun way you can get there!
